The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, launched its Doctoral Programme in Design in 2017 to advance research, innovation, and knowledge creation in Design and allied disciplines. The programme aims to foster rigorous inquiry, critical reflection, and the development of new theories, practices, and creative expressions that contribute to Design education, professional practice, and society. The PhD degree is awarded for original research culminating in a thesis that significantly extends the body of knowledge in Design, including practice-based research centered on creative outcomes.

NID offers the PhD programme in both Practice-led and Theory-led research modes, allowing scholars to pursue either creative practice as a research methodology or theoretical investigations that advance design knowledge. The programme is available in both full-time and part-time formats. Full-time scholars are required to be on campus and are expected to complete the programme within three years, extendable up to five years, while part-time scholars may complete it within five years, extendable up to seven years, with mandatory attendance during scheduled academic activities. Part-time candidates are not eligible for financial support from the Institute.
